Mel Owens is Golden Bachelor season 2's lead

‘The Golden Bachelor’ reality TV show has a new leader, this time it is none other than Mel Owens, former NFL player. This April 2025, ABC renewed the show and announced now lawyer Mel as its lead.

Owens was selected by the Los Angeles Rams as the ninth overall pick in the 1981 NFL Draft. Eight years later, he quit being a linebacker, and moved to Orange County in California, and began practicing law.

Moreover, he is a family man with two kids.

From Happily Married to Need of Companionship

People Magazine reported, the new Golden Bachelor Owens was previously married. He met his love while working in the legal fiend, and had two sons together. But, after the end of his marriage, he became a devoted father. Their marriage lasted for 25 years.

Now, Mel wants some attention back to himself. After being a good father for years, now, he want someone with whom he can share life’s everyday moments, make plans for the future, and grow stronger as a couple.

The press release reads,

“As the Golden Bachelor, he’s eager to meet someone who shares this vision and finally find that perfect teammate he’s been waiting for in his golden years.”

Owens said he wants someone that’s honest, charming, loving, and someone full of life.

Host Jesse Palmer Calls Owens A ‘Family Man’

‘Bachelor’ franchise host Jesse didn’t even know Owens was the lead cast until he visited ‘Golden’ lead’s home a day before. Mel revealed that he and his younger son were watching the Bachelor ad, and he even commented – Dad! you should be the bachelor!

Talking exclusively with USA Today, Jesse said, ‘Owens is an excellent choice to be the next Golden Bachelor. He further said,

“He’s very genuine and a family man.”

Palmer as a former NFL player himself, is touched by Owen’s journey from a player to lawyer, and now a reality TV leading man. Jesse sees him as a person who had a lot of ups and downs, as he faced passing of his dad, and then went through a divorce.
